I use several different author bios depending on where I am guest posting. For example, for my guest post over on Successful Blogging , I wrote:. Elna Cain is a freelance writer. She works closely with B2C and B2B businesses providing blog writing, ghostwriting and copywriting services. Not quite sure freelance writing is for you? Why not try her totally free course, Get Paid to Write Online! You know, the best thing you can do for your new freelance writing biz is to network with other writers.

When I first started, I reached out to a few freelance writers that I was stalking at the time! While most said go with your gut, I was grateful for their interaction and their patience with my numerous questions. A few months later, I had freelance writers refer work to me! How amazing was that?

Hold up! What gives? Well, to maximize your chances at landing a quality writing gig, you need to work both ends — indirect and direct approaches. While cold pitching is a direct way to land work, warm pitching, on the other hand, is a more indirect and slower way. It all centers around creating relationships with brands and business.

For example, when I find a business in my niche, I follow them and Like their Facebook fan page. That way I can keep an eye on them and engage with their posts when I can. How easy is this? If you have a social media profile — which you should! Also, it lets other freelance writers know that you are available for writing work.

Early on when I first started freelance writing, I was lucky enough to land a writing job from simply saying I was for hire. A prospect messaged me on LinkedIn and told me another writer had referred me to him. I had no clue who this writer was, so I messaged her back and asked how my name came up in their conversation. Presto, landed a gig! Another great way to land consistent work is to contact your local printing and web design companies.

These businesses have a full roster of clients that need web content. For many print journalists and writers, when they decide to go online and freelance, they stick to writing for publications and selling their stories. All Freelance Writing has a library of publications that accept and pay for submissions. Many sites pay for your story too! Generally you have to cold pitch your story idea first and then pitch each additional time for subsequent stories.

There is a lot of potential for writing gigs on Facebook. If you know the groups to join then you should have no problem finding consistent work. But, this approach does take time as you are building relationships with potential leads. For me, I belong to several entrepreneurial Facebook groups and I do my best to join in on the conversation.

I might also throw out a question to see if there are entrepreneurs that need help and are overworked. It never hurts to give it a try and put yourself out there! If you put yourself out there in a Facebook group, you could very well end up with a gig that hour. I know, it can be scary! Using this tactic has generated me thousands of dollars in freelance writing income and when I have a spot open for another client, I always first approach my existing clients to see if they have someone in mind. And since most of my clients are quality clients, I know with confidence they will refer me to another quality client.

By the way, I did end up landing that client and love writing for them. Well, I know for a fact Craigslist can be a well of quality clients. You just have to know what cities to look in. Businesses in big cities often have big budgets. So do a quick search in each of these cities a couple times a week and get pitching! Besides publications and magazines, there are hundreds of blogs that pay for your guest post. Landing a paid guest spot is a bit more challenging then landing a free guest spot.

You can also go on Pinterest or search in Google for blogs that pay for guest posts. Then you do it all over again. Did you know LinkedIn has a job board? I never did until recently. I have no idea why because I do spend a considerable amount of time networking on LinkedIn.

From here you can decide how you want to approach these businesses — use a warm pitch or a cold pitch. If you have the time to invest in building a relationship and you have clients already, I would use a warm pitch approach. But, if you are itching to land work now, go ahead and add these places to your list to cold pitch.

My point is that your direct-delivery go-ahead-and-do-it offerings might be just what I need to jump in. My horoscope did specifically mention an illness or setback being the catalyst for major creative output….

I feel some hope for the first time after finding this post. Thank you soooooooo much! Hello Elna, Thanks a lot for such an informative post. I was stucked in learning programming and designing stuff. Thanks a lot for that help. Great person you are Elna. So glad you found freelance writing the goal for you. Freelance writing jobs online is a great way to make money and stay at home. Your article is really helpful.

It would be nice if you gave me some advice on what to do. Hi Elna, thanks for your tips, they are very helpful indeed! I speak and write Spanish as well as French fluently, the latter being my first language; thus I often find the translations provided for all sorts of items fairly poor — sometimes of the Google Translate level!

I know from experience that when possible, writers should translate their own work, and I was wondering if you knew of any niche for which the writing gigs also require to be translated. Any suggestion is welcome! That seems like a great freelance writing tip for translators. Perhaps think of your ideal client and then think of the type of businesses they have to help you hone down your ideal client for freelancing!

Thanks for the feedback and Happy New Year! Hey Elna, Thanks for wonderful insight on how to get started as a freelance writer. I am a newbie with no experience on writing blogs but I am seriously considering it now. Grateful for you help. Bless you! I took a look at your blog and love your topics! Many article writers do find freelance jobs from fiverr but payout are ridiculously low. Hi Elna, Great post, so many great ideas!

It definitely makes freelance writing a more tangible option for me! Another twin mama! It really is the best stay at home mom job!

I was writing for major print newspapers in Kenya East Africa plus online news agencies before I moved and settled in the US in Seattle together with my family.

Your article comes at the appropriate time for me since I have been looking for ways to break into fulltime freelance; copy writing, web content, editing and proofing. Back in Kenya I was writing about climate change, environment, agriculture and other related topics. Now I want more of a niche area and that is why I will look at your course to start.

I suggest you take my free course to get you started! I mentioned it to my friend but she said that I should be thinking about a job that is a bit more stable. I still live the idea of free lance writing though as writing has always come very naturally to me. Do you have any ideas about what kind of degree I could do at university or useful stuff I could do in a gap year, or even right now? Thanks you! I would probably find a job to help you figure out what you want to do later on.

You can also try freelance writing as s side hustle after high school! This is some awesome material! Hi Elna, This was all very helpful. Do you have any feedback about what type of contract I might be expected to sign. I interviewed over the phone for a non-science editing position yesterday and they expressed interest in hiring me as an independent contractor. So my question is, Is a contract pretty standard for independent contract writing jobs, in your experience? For big agencies, probably yes! I personally work with small businesses and rely on writing service agreements than contracts!

Thanks very much, Elna! Thanks again for the useful blog postings on writing. Hi Elna, this was really helpful. I wanted to ask a couple questions. My degree is in politics. After uni I had a baby and have decided I want to be a stay-at -home mum. However, I am and have always been interested in writing as a career. I also feel pretty overwhelmed thinking about where to actually start. I feel I would like it to be parent related as opposed to politics. Does it need to focused on one area? You should your expertise and credibility by starting a blog and guest posting!

As for your topics, you can explore that over time! Elna, This post has been SO helpful! I love it! Thank you for all your insightful tips and tricks! I am currently in the process of starting up my own website for blogging, and when I learned about freelance writing I knew I had to try it out! So I just have one question for you, would you suggest having a blog while freelance writing? Maybe as a way to provide a little extra work for clients to refer to as sample work from me?

I was originally going to blog and go the advertising route to provide an income off the blog, but freelance writing seems much more interesting to me. So glad you found some tips to help you get started freelance writing! You can sell your services on it, showcase your work and start a blog as a way to have samples to begin with!

Thank you for the valuable information! I work as a court reporter and I would love to start doing some freelance work on the side. The information you provided will be a big help! Thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, informative article. I am a full time paralegal with a B. How would you reccomend I transition to freelancing. I would find a way to scan those articles and upload them to Contently or some portfolio platform as proof you are a writer and have byline content.

If not, maybe transcribe the article and link to the online version of the newspaper! From there you can have a freelance writer website that promotes your business or you can just get to pitching businesses or go to job boards. I hope this helps! This past year has been a roller coaster ride for me. I want to give freelance writing a try. I did get accepted to a content mill site, but the jobs on there go so fast I can never get a chance to grab one to work on. I also do not blog anymore.

So, how can I get into freelance writing? How do I build up a portfolio or show my writing? Any tips would be great. WHSR receives referral fees from some of the companies listed on this website. A blog on general parenting is going to have a wide selection of products to choose from. YOU need it and use one. So why not review your own web host? There are several parts to writing a review that is both engaging for your audience and beneficial to prospective clients who come your way. Brands LOVE IT when you make their product look good, so take plenty of photos and do everything you can to make the image look good. Write everything you love about this product, but pay attention to what the brand is promoting currently as well.

Line up as many positives as you can and emphasize anything you loved about it. The critical take away I learned from a brand representative was that nothing is perfect. Talking to them is always the answer and it gives them a positive perspective on you. If the brand refuses to accept that guideline, walk away.

Wonder Woman of the left, Wicked Witch of the right, Ocasio-Cortez has become the second most talked-about politician in America, after the President of the United States. No lawmaker in recent memory has translated so few votes into so much political and social capital so quickly.

Her Twitter following has climbed from about 49, last summer to more than 3. Thousands of people tune in to watch her make black-bean soup or re-pot her houseplants on Instagram Live. Immediately after she tweeted the name of her signature red lipstick—Beso, by Stila—it sold out online. The woman everyone calls AOC is as much a villain to the right as she is a hero to the left. Her allies plan to boost primary challengers to moderate and conservative Democrats, a push that Ocasio—Cortez has distanced herself from but one that has earned her the enmity of some colleagues. Many House Democrats resent her celebrity and worry it overshadows efforts to reach the moderate voters who propelled the party to the majority. She was born into a working-class family in the Parkchester section of the Bronx. Her dad owned a small architecture company; her Puerto Rico—born mother cleaned houses. They were deeply rooted in the neighborhood but also wary of its limitations. The family moved to the prosperous Westchester County suburb of Yorktown Heights when she was about 5 so that she and her brother could go to better schools, but they returned frequently to see the rest of their family.

Those minute drives taught her how ZIP code determines destiny, she says. By the time she was in college, some of her cousins were already having kids.
