The subject of several poems are children and child-likeness. But there are rewards for careful reading. We learn of RLS' randy Hogarthian youth, in which he derided bourgeois morality even as he unknowingly yearned for it as an antidote to hollow libertinism. We learn of his distrust of pharmacists and religious strictures, the latter rooted in the old Enlightenm This small collection sheds an outsized light on the RLS' character.

We learn of his distrust of pharmacists and religious strictures, the latter rooted in the old Enlightenment arrogance that would barely outlive the poet. We feel his affection for the imaginative vision of childhood, as well as his pride in his father's work as a lighthouse keeper - as well as his clueless, bohemian pity for what he misinterprets as his father's sacrifice of the Good Life in pursuit of steady pay.
What sticks with me from this chapbook is his wholesome melancholy, rooted in a specific place and swelling with love of country and countrymen. It is a sentiment from before the European suicide of , in which the Enlightenment's hopes died and wholesome melancholy calcified into the repudiating, reproachful type of the modern age.
