No magic mushrooms required. Called the Charles Bonnet Syndrome after the 18th century naturalist who first described it, such phantom sights are fairly common in people with low vision. What is crazy is that something that is relatively common is relatively unknown. And the obscurity of this syndrome may mean that many with Charles Bonnet Syndrome CBS suffer in silence and ignorance. No wonder. Some doctors mistake it for mental illness or they tell their patients not to talk about such silly things. Phantom vision Unlike people who are delusional, most of these people knew immediately that the visions were not real.

The visions would occur daily, weekly or monthly and would be of people, animals or objects, mostly of things never seen before by the person reporting. Some of the visions looked very real, others less clear.
Most were in color, but some in black and white. Most occurred with the eyes open and under poor lighting conditions. Looking away, putting on a bright light or moving the eyes swiftly could sometimes stop the phantom image. About a third of the people with CBS in this study did not like the experience at all. Some were anxious — no wonder — and irritated.
