Each of us has a different tolerance level to caffeine, and it is the same for children. It is both genetics and habituation. In terms of health benefits, I cannot find much research on the subject, but it seems to me that most medical problems with caffeine come at a later stage in adult life, and it is most related to the fast-releasing high doses that come with coffee for those who have some form of metabolic syndrome. In a healthy person, normal caffeine intake is metabolized without problems. Like with any nutrient, there is a high level of intake that can become toxic, and caffeine is no different.
If we are talking about matcha, you would have to drink quite a lot of it to reach levels where the caffeine dose is worrisome. The rewarding properties of other substances simply outweigh the small caffeine levels that people worry about.
