I picked this up not knowing it was the second book of this series. I didn't feel as though I missed anything by reading out of order. This was my first book by Karen Hawkins and I am very taken with her writing. It was a very compelling story. Filled with adventure, suspense, explosions, chases, humor and romance.

I will definitely be reading the others in this series. It was a pretty quick read but very well written. Not very enjoyable as a standalone story. But had too many dangling lead ins to romances and mysteries of other stories that were left hanging. As for the mystery of this heroine's blackmailer, he was identified but disappears. No complete resolution. Overall, filled with secondary cliffhangers.
Not a satisfactory standalone book. Nov 03, Sandra Walker rated it it was amazing. I loved this book, course I seem to love all of Karen's. The two old lady sisters, Emma and Jane, are hilarious and do indeed need their own book. Apr 18, Nicole rated it liked it Shelves: review , historical-romance , read-in When someone steals the artifact from both Marcail and William, they are forced to join forces together to hunt the thief down.
But as they travel across Britain and into Scotland, their history becomes their present, and they just might want it to be their future as well. It took awhile for me to really get involved with the characters. Plus, the two old ladies from the Inn cracked me up like no other. They were fun and hilarious. The romance between William and Marcail was odd at times. They loved and hated each other all at the same time, and were a little too childish to put aside everything and admit their feelings and move forward with the life they both wanted.
There were times I wanted to throttle them both. But once they got their stuff together, I enjoyed them together.

They complimented each other, their lifestyles complimented each other and I loved that. The mystery with the box being stolen and what exactly is going on with the artifact was at times slow moving, and at other times a little confusing. Once Marcail and William caught their thief, the scene that revealed a lot of information was at times jumbled.
It was frustrating to read and try to navigate through, as things were shifting and changing without much explanation. I can only hope that it was just a snafu with the egalley. All in all, I found myself enjoying my first ever Hawkins read, despite some slow moving parts and for me, a lack-luster romance. Despite the seriously flawed characters, they were likeable in the end. For me though, the secondary characters were almost more enjoyable than the main hero and heroine, and set up the ongoing series. I hope to see more from these characters and find out the details of the artifact and why it is so important to so many people.

Scandal in Scotland sparkles with life and crackles with the heat between Marcail and William. Marcail is not your ordinary nineteenth century English miss. William has been hurt by Marcail and he, in turn, has made mistakes when it comes to the person that he loves, but what endeared him to me was his willingness to move past his hurt and truly listen to Marcail. Hawkins weaves in the necessary information that will enable readers new to the series to follow along with ease.

I liked that William's siblings and spouses had minor roles to play, but even when they were no longer around the main characters, I thought the way they interacted was much better. It was certainly on a more even playing field than the way things were for Mary and Angus. So the romance got much better, but I think I ended up just expecting something completely different as I continued reading. I kept imagining that there would be a sense of urgency.
If you are a fan, you ought to pick up this book. If, like me, you find yourself wishing that characters would postpone getting it on until actually saving siblings from mortal peril, you ought to read something else. Dec 20, Gaylynn rated it liked it. I enjoyed the book as the story was fairly fast paced and the characters likable overall.
As the norm with romances, I was more than willing to overlook the seemingly impossible coincidences and good luck of the main characters not to mention strange plot devices like having everyone travel all over the British Isle just to hand off a blackmail payment between two parties who both live in London! That said, the first page states that William has been a captain of his own ship for 15 years. Maybe I am missing something?? My other issue is that the book states that William is the only man Marcail has ever been with.

Her only option to protect her family, from the mysterious blackmailer forces her to steal from him an Egyptian artifact that his family had recovered to saved his brother from the kidnappers. He follows her to get it back, only to find out it has been taken from her as well, and now the fun begins. The flare of old feelings, romance and passion is added to the mystery and suspense of the story to make it fun and entertaining. Some of the questions are answer and new surprises appear to hint and spike your interest on whom the probable love interest and new adventure is going to be for the other Hurst brothers in the coming sequel.

We soon find that Marcail is not the brazen horrible beauty she seems to be, but also someone who is desperately trying to save her family from ruin and left William for the same reasons. The box is stolen before the truth comes out, but William is still willing to find out who her blackmailer is as well as gaining the stolen item back. And while I did like Marcail in the end, I still can't say I fully identified with her either. I did enjoy William's part and wouldn't mind adding a handsome captain like him to my man harem.
The next book involves the brother, Robert, and I think that one is going to be a wild ride. Especially when it seems his intended is a thief and con artist. William and Marcail were bound to come to an impasse, unaware their hearts and lives were endangered. The slow, agonizing deception held within the bonds of a drug-induced state was felt. Set within the romantic confines of close quarters, it had a lusty build-up, an anticipation of love renewed despite the tugging and pulling of unselfish needs. Bonding of the two main characters against a common enemy revealed a deeper look at their maturity level and acceptance of each other. Clues to the mystery of the artifact and the enemy were timed nicely. My review was based on the paperback edition.

When I initially picked this book, I didn't realize it was part of a series - and I have to say I loved the first book too!
